Top 5 in Cyprus
Whether you’ve found yourself a last minute holiday bargain online or a great package deal from Thomas Cook, Cyprus holidays have successfully retained their target travel audience in spite of recent economic fluctuations. A quick glance over the islands’ top attractions and it isn’t too hard to understand its enduring allure. Not only is Cyprus popular with first time travelers, thanks, no doubt, to hearty recommendations from friends, but is just as favoured by travelers who have already tried and tested its wares and, once bitten, keep coming back for more. If you’ve yet to see it for yourself, here are our top five Cypriot attractions:
- Paphos Harbour and Castle - This historic site is a major tourist draw yet it still maintains a great sense of grandeur and mystique. The building dates back to a castle of 1391, which was largely demolished by the Venetians. The Ottomans then used the refurbished site as dungeon space and the British came in later using the space as storage for salt! Now, it affords one of the most beautiful coastal views on the island over the myriad of rainbow coloured fishing boats bobbing about the harbour.
-
Larnaca Salt Lake - This is a spectacular place to visit all year round but if you go towards the end of winter or in early spring you might be lucky enough to see the flamingos and other migratory birds who flock to the area to avoid the cold weather elsewhere. Just like us.
-
Cedar Valley - One of Cyprus’ best destinations for nature enthusiasts, the Cedar Valley is a wonderful place to marvel at the beauty of the indigenous Cyprus cedar tree. Far away from the tourist traps, this magical location offers guaranteed tranquility and peace.
-
The Paphos Mosaics - Undoubtedly one of Cyprus’ most important historical sites, these colourful and detailed Roman mosaics reveal snapshots of early Roman life as well as vibrant scenes from ancient mythology.
-
Ayia Napa - Party animals flock here during the summer but there are many reasons to visit this once sleepy fishing village. Some of the best beaches on the island are scattered around this area.
