Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the most popular beach holiday destinations. It sits in the eastern Mediterranean at the crossroads of three continents - Europe, Africa and Asia. Cyprus is 240km east/west by about 100km at its widest point. It is dominated by two huge mountain ranges - Troodos Mountains and the Kyrenia range with a high point at Mt Olympus (1,952m).
Following an invasion by Turkish troops in 1974 it has been split in two with the Turkish Cypriot sector in the north and Greek Cypriot sector in the south. North Cyprus is not recognised by any country but Turkey. The population in the south is roughly 778,000 with an estimated 88,900 in the north.
Cyprus enjoys a south Mediterranean climate of hot dry summers from May to September and mild, wet winters from November to March. Cyprus has almost year-round clear skies and daylight length ranges from 9.8 hours in December to 14.5 hours in June.
